The very thing I like about Ruud is why I think he lost this match – he’s a great sportsman and gentleman on the courts (maybe too much). He doesn’t handle really aggressive play well, as indicated by his matches with Kyrgios. He even said in a recent interview that the extra kick Novak and Nadal have, he lacks. Berrettini was playing really strong and aggressive. Ruud got several second serve opportunities against him, but his play was just too mannered.

This win is going to give Berrettini a lot of confidence in the new season

wow berrettini actually improved the backhand.. and foot skills are getting better as well
Berrettini’s style of play is in some ways reminiscent of Del Potro’s. Big serve, huge forehand, and average to worse than average backhand. That being said, this tournament, Berrettini’s backhand has looked a lot better.
Seeing the level of play here, and the depth of talent among the top 50 in the world, makes me even more confident in my prediction that there is a really darn good chance going forward we won’t see a single an win 10 grand slam singles titles in their career, MAYBE one or two players can get to 10 or 12 but I will 1000% guarantee NOBODY will get 20, much less 3 players at the same time!

Berrettini actually learned the backhand
i wish you included that forehand exchange at 30-15 (I think), where they just bludgeoned forehands at each other until berrettini got ruud with a drop shot
You can clearly see Berrettini’s improved backhands, this surface seems to favor him. 👍
Looks like Berrettini was working on empowering his backhand as it looks much better and precisely stronger, so should he keep today’s level i believe that he’s gonna the man to beat in AO
