As a former junior tennis player and someone who coaches tennis now, it’s perfectly normal for top players to look lost a bit prior to the start of the season. Nadal was getting into match form and likely working out something technical changes and tactics. It’s normal for top players to lose during practice because they’re typically working on something specific. Of course during a match it’s much for difficult and takes some time. Someone like Nadal who constantly adapts his game, I will not be surprised to see him turn it up as the tournament progresses. I don’t think he’s the favorite, but don’t count him out.

Bit of a baptism of fire for Jack but he showed what he’s got. No cake walk for Rafa. Once the sunshine came out Rafa woke up.. like a flower in the Spring 😊

Everyone was taking him off at the start.. But forget that Nadal is focusing more on GS.. If he would have reached the finals in both previous ATP he might not have had enough fuil for AOs.. Not saying he will win this turnoment again… But it’s now he is really going to try

Draper gave as good a fight as could be expected of a guy at this stage of his career. There’s a lot of hype building around him but remember this is his first EVER Australian Open match. Given he came up against Rafa of all people he put in a good performance. With some more endurance under his belt he’ll quickly become a contender for the top 10 I feel

People are saying Rafa was lucky and everything that they feel but remember he was written off a long time ago.. and people also commented that Rafa would not go far in Australia last year.. but we saw Rafa winning the open after being 2 sets down… Against the guy who had beaten the best nole version in 2021.. so you can’t write him off

Nothing :v

At 36, what can we expect? Of course things will be a lot more difficult and challenging for Rafa, fighting the young guns full of fire and energy. I just hope Rafa will perform his utmost best using all the experiences he has. Go Rafa!

Draper has all the ingredients to be a NIGHTMARE for any player: 6’4 – Leftie and built proportionally (not a rake).

He should have power, speed, angles aplenty and a decent serve. Shame he had to play Nadal in round 1. Be interesting to see Draper develop over the next few years. Good Luck Nadal!

Given Nadal’s recent form and fitness, a solid and surprisingly easy win in the end. He does tend to need matches to get into form in slams these days and this may be a good warm up for tougher contests ahead.
