Purple Coffin Man

Watched Wu blitz through the challenger tour last year, crazy to think this guy was almost outside the world’s top 1900 around this time last year. He has a great game, such easy power especially off his forehand, and I’m happy he’s breaking through. Shapovalov being as inconsistent as ever doesn’t surprise me but he played a class opponent.

Wu has been impressive these past few months. Solid game overall & also his forehand is a real weapon. It’s got accuracy, speed & power. He can also unleash a full swing on a moment’s notice on that side. Such a quick arm. Reminds me of Nishikori’s fh, without the complicated grip restrictions he had.

Mr. Tiafoe looks, right now, the sharpest of the group. All strokes firing, good anticipation, and quick wheels. This event appears to be his to lose.

Shapovalov’s forehand keeps getting worse and worse. It used to be his best shot, now it looks like it’s his worst. Such a wonky, unstable technique, bent arm, close to the body, leaning backwards, using his arm and shoulder instead of his forearm and wrist, and those Nadalesque finishes look just weird on him… The power and precision has been lost on his forehand for a long time.

The Bounce Effect

Stop hating on Shapo. Once he irons out a few things he is gonna be a beast. He’s only 23, he still has time.

Anyone that has watched Wu on the Challenger circuit knows he is very good. However, Shapo’s game has evolved like the other up and comers, and I fear he will never reach his potential, especially given his volatile, and at times, fragile mental mindset.

D. Shapovalov had the sort of pure talent you can only find in the ATP top 5. Out of a poor team, limited work and mental resources, he won’t be part of the ATP top 30 by this end of this year. A true shame but he does prefer to enjoy the Bahamas and some other things…
