Fognini didn’t tank in the second set. He was tired after the first and had no choice but to rest and try to win in three. Connors used to do it for the same reason as he got older.

This match proves that Fognini still has a lot of quality left. He seems to only be inspired nowadays when the opponent is one of the big guns.

Fognini had his foot and ankle wrapped in a medical timeout between sets 1 and 2. He could not move properly for the rest of the match. It’s surprising that he was able to finish it.

It’s a shame that Fognini lost, but it’s understandable that his pyhsical strength did not last long. I hope Alcaraz to grab more titles especially the big ones this year, but when these 2 guys meet again, I still hope Fognini wins, I still could not forget when he’s in top form on clay, what he did was simply stunning, not big movement but still he’s everywhere on the court to hit winners.

Fognini always seemed like one of those players who found the sport extremely easy; a natural talent. He just never really managed to do what he should have done with it. Carlos on the other hand seems to be doing everything with his talent from day 1

I went to Auckland classic open for Fognini match, was sooo disappointed, he lost very quickly. But this match shows he still is a good one😊

Great match between Alcaraz and Fognini, very happy too for Lajovic, really like his gamestyle.

Does anyone know which song is played at 10:30? Thanks a lot!

At 0:36 you can see that Fognini is still hampered by the left-foot fracture that he sustained last month (he kept his left leg stiff at first while walking). This is also confirmed by the commentator at 2:44.

Well done by Fabio but Carlitos was really not playing at his best. He’ll need to improve if he wants to win the title again!

With proper mentality Fognini would be an absulute top 10 tennis monster. The ease of his strokes is unmatched, the effortles power he is able to generate is amazing. But he’s Fabio…

Fognini is right up there with the greats like Wawrinka & Bublik.

These people know how to hit a ball better than anyone else.

Can’t sleep on Fognini, he’s a giant killer. Alcaraz is all business. Lethal. Love his game and mental resilience.

Fognini ball is not that fast and high, but deep to the baseline. It is difficult to an aggressive player like Alcaraz. However, Alcaraz found his rhythm and managed to breakthrough it and win the second and third set. fun to watch. remind me of Fabrice Santoro.

Strong, smart, experienced, unpredictable Fognini, delighted the fans with a beautiful tennis class for Alcaraz in the first set. Alcaraz took it well and he he must be most thankful for it.

Fognini must be taken as it is, neither more nor less.
Huge heart and arm, absolutely out of the ordinary.
Could he have given more? I don’t know but he was fine with it like this and it must be fine with us too.
He lived his life, had fun, earned good money and still manages to give us priceless and magnificent tennis moments.
Comparing longevity with Djokovic seems silly to me and, by the way, other players at 35 have retired for a while.

Fognini is an extra player, he’s just discouraged and that kills him, and when he wants to, he knows how to play exceptionally well.

Alcaraz vs Fognini match was hilarious. Very very weird from beginning to end. At times I was like what in the world am I watching. Some of the worst serving by both ever in the tennis history, then some great points, then some terrible points. Really strange but entertaining lmao.
