This clay season was a mini-comeback from Rafa. As he said himself, his motivation to compete was at an all-time low during Monte Carlo and Barcelona, after injuries during the USO, Paris-Bercy and IW (he even locked himself in a hotel room in Barcelona, before trying to motivate himself to get ‘back in the game’). Some wondered if his reign at RG was over. Then Rome 2019 changed it all, he got revenge over Tsitsipas, and delivered multiple 6-0 and 6-1 sets on his way to the title.

A very successful year, but one that, perhaps, only Rafa could have delivered, given the circumstances.

2019 the last great tennis season. Djokovic/Nadal at their early thirties. Federer was still playing at a high level. Wimbledon case in point. Tsitsipas making a name for himself. Medvedev making his us open series run. Lastly Thiem who had a winning record against the big 3 in 2019. Awesome quality of tennis

Tsitsipas isn’t any better now than he was in 2019. Maybe he has a bit more variety but that’s it. He would have reached the AO final in 2019 just like in 2023 except he played Nadal in 2019 instead of Khachanov. Reached the Madrid final in 2019 beating Nadal on clay, beat Djokovic in Shanghai, won the ATP finals beating Federer and Thiem etc

Don’t forget, Nadal crushed Steff at AO, So to comeback and beat Rafa on home soil – literally home soil (Clay/Spain)
