French Open: doubles pair disqualified after stray shot leaves ball girl in tears

Aldila Sutjiadi and Miyu Kato were disqualified from their doubles match at Roland-Garros after the latter struck a ball to the opposite end of the court between points and accidentally hit a ball girl, leaving her in tears.

The initial call from the chair was a warning before Marie Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo, Sutjiadi and Kato’s opponent, highlighted to the umpire that the ball girl was clearly distressed. The supervisor was then called to the court and the decision was made to disqualify the pair.

The player just passes the ball to the girl, and the ball touches her and she has an emotional panic attack helped by the other team accusing an aggression that didn’t exist. Shame on Tormo and Bouzkova, that was really poor sportsmanship.

This was ridiculous from start to finish. The ball girl’s reaction to a light tap from the ball, the opponents lobbying for the disqualification, the announcers playing along with it, and the officials giving in. All should be ashamed.

This is freaking ridiculous! Kato obviously didn’t mean it and the pace was not fast at all! I got hit harder occasionally when I was playing in early teens!

Unbelievable poor sportsmanship by the opposing team Also maybe they shouldn’t have children on the court if they cant handle this type of thing.

The lamest part of this all was Tormo and Bouzkova appealing to the chair judge about the ball girl. Seriously, looking for any possibility to win outside of the lines is disgraceful and pathetic. I hope they were proud of their win.

The umpire gave Kato a warning, but then Bouzkova and Sorribes Tormo acted on it, overturned the decision and instead had her disqualified. And while Kato was crying from shock of it all, Bouzkova and Sorribes Tormo were laughing at the decision. How disgusting is that!!! I have never been more sickened watching tennis!

Shameful behavior by opponents. The ump was just going to give a warning until they lobbied to get the win. One of the most pitiful things I’ve seen in sports and there have been a lot.

The judge initially gave a warning but the opponents wanted a disqualification. Dirty move by the opponents

The ball girl was clearly not fit for her position. It’s not the player’s fault. And the opponents should be disqualified for pushing for a default. Unsportsmanlike conduct. The French Open is now a joke. What an embarrassment.

Total disgrace. Clearly not on purpose. Tennis officials continue to show why they are the most ridiculous and pathetic in world sport.

It really shows what happens when one tragically incompetent and weak person is taken advantage of by those with bad intentions.

This decision to disqualify the players is insane, TOTALLY INSANE! I agree with the disqualification if one of the players intentionally hit the ball out of desperation or anger then hit the (ball) girl. What a terrible decision and this should be investigated because the decision to DQ was uncalled for!

Pure craziness! The ball girl was crying because she had become a spectacle in front of the crowd, not because she got injured.

Wow, that’s next level softness by that ball kid and umpire. That ball was clearly fed to the back of the court

It clearly wasn’t on purpose, at this level of sport I can’t believe disqualification for this would even be possible. There is no way on earth the same would happen in the men’s competition, sexist refereeing and an absolute embarrassment of women’s sports. The opposing team should be ashamed of themselves for now putting that girl in the news for something I’m sure she’d rather forget. The only team that should be disqualified are the team that appealed to win a disqualification.

This is unbelievable. How could the association let this injustice happen to Kato and Sutjiadi. Appalled

These players train their whole lives for this moment, and disqualified for something so small? The ball didn’t hit her in the face or neck — and there was no malicious intent by the player. What an outrage.

Several years ago at the Aus Open, Nadal mis-hit a service return which hit a ballgirl in the head really hard. She flinched, and that was the extent of her reaction. Nadal quickly apologised to her, and she indicated to him that she was fine. Nadal’s opponent didn’t kick up a fuss, and Nadal wasn’t disqualified. But this here is an absolute farce! Shame, shame, shame on Bouzkova, Sorribes Tormo and the match umpire!

Kato didnt mean it. She also directly apologize to the ball girl. This is really ridiculous, 1000% shameful to the opponent & umpire!

The Girl was probably just crying because she was nervous and thought that she did something wrong. Shame on the opponent team for using the girl for their advantage. There is really no pride and honor in winning like this

That girls reaction to getting tapped by a tennis ball is exactly what wrong with this generation. She was hit by a lob tennis ball and acted like she just survived a 90mph rollover.

The saddest part is, no adults were actually thinking about the well-being of the ball girl. She will be forever associated with this controversy. If everybody had helped her feel better on the spot, including Sorribes Tormo and Bouzkova instead of arguing for the disqualification, one day all this would have been a funny memory for her. Instead all the adults used her for their own gains.

This is the most shameful and disgraceful decision ever made in Tennis. She just passed the ball towards the direction of ball girl to help, and it was purely accidental and worst past were the opponents who are a a shame. My thoughts for the disqualified players, who did no wrong.

It’s clear that it wasn’t intentional, and it’s a story that ends with a word of apology. Shame on the Spanish pair who have no dignity. The organizers who made this decision should be stripped of all eligibility.

The umpire actually claims that disqualification is justified if you hit someone with a ball… and they are ‘injured’. No way did that gentle tap on the shoulder from the ball ‘injure’ that girl. Absolutely ridiculous and a disgraceful response from the officials and the opposing team. The pathetic over-reaction from that ball girl clearly did not help matters and simply shows that she should never have been on court in the first place. Utterly disgusted by it all.

No wonder there were so many empty seats during the whole tournament. The management of Roland Garros should apologize to the players and the whole world. Is this what a Grand Slam tournament should look like? Disgusting and disgraceful.

Absolutely ridiculous and shameful, for the opponents, the officials, and the incompetent ball girl. One of the worst calls I’ve seen in any sport ever.

返信する
GeorgeOfTheJungle

Disgusting, there was no malice or intent on what she did. The rules state “shall not violently, dangerously or with anger hit, kick or throw a tennis ball” and that clearly did not happen here. It’s absolutely disgraceful that a judge can be so heavily influenced by players.

I got hit by baseballs, softballs, frisbees, golf balls, tennis balls, footballs, and soccer balls as a kid. A lot harder than that ball girl got hit. It was mostly accidental. It’s clear that this young lady is not cut out to be on the court and that the doubles team should not have been disqualified. A shameful moment in professional tennis!

The opponents didn’t even ask the ball girl if she was okay. They just pushed for the umpire to default Kato and her partner. Disgusting. They were even SMILING/HAPPY at the situation.

There is no way Kate hit the ball with any malice and the ball girl can’t be hurt that much at all. This is a ridiculous decision, kato clearly passed the ball to the ball person who was paying attention. Kato should not in my opinion have been disqualified.

Oh My Gosh.

This is a complete defeat for the organizers of Roland Garros. To put an emotionally unstable person who is obviously not capable of performing that function as a ball collector; then the judges who do not see the absurdity of the situation and react by supporting the stupidity and emotional immaturity of the ball collector; then the unsportsmanlike tennis players of the opposing team who think it is perfectly normal to ask for a penalty for the opposing team of tennis players and at the same time act as if it is normal to try to steal the victory. The match should be suspended until the decision is changed, which must be, the referee’s disqualification due to a disastrous decision, the opposition team’s disqualification and fine, and the placement of the disqualified team in the next round. As things stand now, the Japanese tennis player will be permanently scared.

The two who called for disqualification did not see the moment the ball hit.
The claim that he only explained the situation to the umpire who did not see the moment the ball hit is nothing but a lie.
It’s almost an admission that every action was intentional.
Maybe because he realized he couldn’t win.
They are losing both in tennis and as people.

I watched the video again and again. Kato was passing the ball to the ball girl whose job was to catch the ball. However, instead of catching it, the ball girl dodged the ball and got hit on the shoulder. She was not crying because it hurt (the ball wasn’t hit hard and it was hit from a distance), but because she failed her job as a ball girl and made a fool of herself!
Shame on the opponents who begged for disqualification to get a cheap win and shame on the umpire who made the worst decision of the centry!

This is pathetic on so many levels. From the ball girl not paying attention (or even being out there for that matter), to the opponents begging the ump for a DQ after he gave a warning, to the decision of the umpire to change his call because the girl was crying, and this happening at a tournament as big as the French Open.

As a former ball boy, even after a point, you need to be aware of balls being exchanged/ moving around the court. Plus, this is a grand slam tournament, she could have and should have been able to catch that ball out of the air. She wasn’t doing her job.
