I’m sorry that Thiem couldn’t go all the way, but Baez was clearly better. The good thing is that Dominic’s forehand this week has come close to his pre-injury level. The bad thing (and one of the reasons why he has been struggling in recent matches) is that his backhand has regressed a lot. Last year it was the only shot that was as good as in his peak years (and in the autumn possibly even better), but lately it’s been error-prone in rallies and weak in defence.

My favorite players Stan and Thiem both played extremely best in past games but sad fact none of them could win final. But nice to see Stan and Thiem’s comeback

Nothing good comes for free. It was a really an improvement for Domi playing 3 grueling sets each match, with a fighting mentality and grit. As a fellow tennis player, it’s practically impossible for us to comeback and even hold a racquet after a wrist injury like that. But you did that, and you made to an ATP final. You fell a few steps short, but these are just the stepping stones. It takes a lot of strength, stamina, passion and mentality to comeback. As said, Good things take time and what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. We believe in you Thiem❤.

Encouraging week for Thiem, very difficult to see how he gets back to his best though in my opinion

It’s so painful to watch Thiem play. A massive talent but his court position is making it near impossible for him to win points unless he comes up with an incredible high risk flat winner or his opponent makes an error. Any benefit he seeks to gain by standing so far back in order to give himself more time to hit quality groundies is completely negated by the fact his shots are having to travel much further, losing velocity and giving his opponents much more time to position themselves behind the ball and hit quality shots back, taking control of the point from a better court position. Stand back on the return sure, but then transition forward afterwards closer to the baseline to take time away on subsequent shots and put the opponent on the defensive. The way he plays he just never looks like winning points.

So nice to see Thiem in a final, I hope there’ll be many more to come. Congrats to Baez as well, terrific clay player!

I feel sorry for Thiem. I’ve seen a lot of progress since Wimbledon and he is on his way to the form of the past (I hope). However, it must be admitted that Baez played a great match. Even watching Thiem play accurate and tight on the line, I was shocked that Baez was there to pick up those balls.

Positive signs this week for Dom. Even in this loss the forehand looked a little better than it has this season. I think his game has been better suited for hard courts since 2020. Forces him to play a little closer to the baseline and not give up so much ground. Also, you can see in this match that the backhand slice was completely ineffective and I think it would be a better choice on hard courts. Not expecting any monster runs this year, but I do think we will see some steady improvement.

I’m happy for Baez; besides being a nice guy, he’s playing against people who are bigger and taller than he is and yet he levels the playing field with his amazing skill.
