Rafa fans shouldnt be mad at this, he’s not some miracle that can go straight back into beast mode after not playing for so long, I’m glad he had a tough match that tested him, and he fought well as always.
One of the best matches of 2024 so far. Thompson played out of his mind.

All positive for Rafa. He needed a long match to test his fitness and match prowess. He now has things to work on so really positive for AO.
Thompson has the most improved backhand I’ve seen a pro player develop- it was an obvious weakness now it’s a weapon
That second set itself was a highlight reel, amazing match it had everything including outside interference.
What a stupendous comeback from Thompson! Saving 3 MPs when the score was 4-5 (30-40) and 4-6(tie-break). He was level-headed at the most pivotal moments in order to pursue his combat against Rafa. Even so, it could have been a more different scenario.

Love Nadal, but he bottled that second set hard
Disappointing for Rafa, but he played against an inspired opponent and the match got a little bit too physical for him at this stage. It was the type of match that he needed to end in 2 sets and he had his chances, but it just wasn’t his day. Thompson deserved to win for this kind of performance. Overall, a positive tournament for Rafa and plenty of good signs. It’s just about match fitness and consistency now.
So glad Rafa got out here to regain the feeling of playing a tournament for the grand slams. He’s such a winner because he’s learned how to play tournaments, and that is the experience he needs to re-feel so he can close on his match points.

Sucks that Nadal lost but I’m glad he got in three good matches. Now the AO awaits. Don’t see him winning the whole thing but at least he will be competitive and hopefully healthy.
Thompson never gives up. He saved the match points like it’s the end of his life.
This match is at the level of a master 1000 final. Both players did so good. Rafa definitely needs matches like this though it doesn’t feel good to him losing quite soon. He now knows better about his body, he has pushed his level up a lot in this match. I even feel like he felt enough after 3 hours playing so he want to rest soon to maintain his well being. Rafa fans have reasons to believe this year

Honestly more impressed at how healthy Rafa looked in his matches. Win or lose his body bounced back tremendously from his injury if he can maintain this level of play🥳 hoping to see much more Rafa in AO
Great comeback from Rafa this year! I hope he can keep improving and return to his 2022 level.
It seems that the physical problem Rafa was suffering at the beginning of the third set was just a muscle overload. He left the court smiling and signing for the fans.
